Claro and Telemig get green light for Minas Gerais launch

15 Apr 2005

Brazilian telecoms watchdog Anatel has granted approval for Claro and Telemig Cellular to launch PCS services in Minas Gerais. The two companies will shortly sign 15-year authorisation contracts to offer services in the state using the E-band licences the purchased last year; the authorisations can be extended for a further 15 years. América Móvil unit Claro won a licence covering sector 1 of Minas Gerais in September 2004 with a bid of BRL51.2 million (USD19.9 million). Telemig paid BRL9.73 million for its licence covering 57 municipalities in sector 3. Claro will compete with TIM, Oi and Telemig, while Telemig will face off against CTBC Telecom, TIM and Oi.
