Carphone on the up and up

15 Apr 2005

Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s biggest mobile phone retailer, has predicted that pre-tax profits for its financial year ending 31 March 2006 will be at the upper end of market expectations at around GBP121 million (USD227 million), up from an estimated GBP102 million (USD192 million) in 2004/05. Much of the company’s optimism stems from the recent impressive performance of its UK residential fixed line business TalkTalk, which reported a near fivefold expansion of its customer base to 920,000 in the year to 31 March 2005. Carphone expects that figure to have more than doubled to around two million by March 2006. With continuing hard fought competition between market operators ensuring strong sales of mobile handsets, the company has announced plans to significantly expand its retail sites to another 250 stores across Europe this year, primarily in the UK and Spain.
