Ministry prepares to issue long-distance licences

13 Apr 2005

The Ministry for Communications and Informatisation (Minsvyaz) is currently finalising its plans for the distribution of long-distance telephony licences, Russian Telecoms minister Leonid Reiman told the Russian Economic Forum yesterday. Reiman says that prospective long-distance operators, which will break Rostelecom’s monopoly in the sector, will have to pay around USD40,000 for the concessions to provide services nationwide. Minsvayaz has yet to confirm a timetable for issuing the licences, but has promised to make the concessions available to ‘a wide range of companies… without any serious restrictions’.
