Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to form an alliance with a bank or financial institution, in a bid to diversify its revenue stream. The operator said that it could no longer rely solely on voice or data traffic for revenue growth due to the high penetration of mobile phones in the country – currently around 65%. The company has not yet revealed any possible future partners.
In a separate story, DoCoMo and Qualcomm have successfully completed W-CDMA interoperability testing on the cellco’s FOMA network. The new service, which will be launched later this year, will allow global users to roam on DoCoMo’s 3G infrastructure.
