Telecoms sector to see major overhaul?

12 Apr 2005

The Australian government has revealed that it may launch a major overhaul of the country’s telecoms regulations, in preparation for the full privatisation of Telstra. Communications Minister Helen Coonan has said that the government hopes to ensure that there is effective competition and future investment in the market. One proposal is to split Telatra’s retail and wholesale operations into two separate businesses, a move which could improve competition and deliver greater benefits to consumer and business customers. The current legislation on 3G networks are also being examined, so see whether they provide enough incentive for telcos to invest in the technology.
