Operators praise NTC clampdown on TOT number hoarding

12 Apr 2005

Thailand’s private telecoms operators have unanimously hailed a proposal by the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) to collect fees from incumbent TOT Corp for ‘hoarding’ millions of unused telephone numbers as its smaller rivals complain of a lack of numbers of their own. The NTC estimates that TOT holds around eleven million unused numbers allocated to its cellular subsidiary Thai Mobile; the cellco was created in August 2000 but currently has just 200,000 users in a market numbering close to 28 million. Much of the difficulties have arisen because the NTC has only been operational for six months, and has yet to revise the national numbering plan. Mobile operators including TA Orange (True Mobile) and DTAC have praised the regulator for its interim proposal.
