UTStarcom plans new plant in China

The US-based equipment manufacturer UTStarcom has approached the Chinese government for approval to construct a new manufacturing plant which will produce 3G and GSM mobile handsets. The company says it plans to invest CNY1.39 billion (USD167.9 million) in the project in Zhejiang Province. The plant will take four years to build and is expected to have capacity to produce 17 million GSM phones and 25 million 3G handsets a year. UTStarcom already has R&D and manufacturing facilities in the US, China and India.
