Regulator looking to punish unwarranted tossing

8 Apr 2005

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is investigating the practice of the wrongful tossing of telephone lines by the country’s operators, according to local newspaper The Daily Champion. The regulator is worried about the rising problem of some subscribers having their service temporarily disconnected – what it terms the ‘tossing of lines’ – despite them being up to date with their bills. Whilst telcos can legitimately disconnect the lines of customers behind on their payments, the NCC says it wants to introduce legislation requiring operators to pay mandatory compensation any customers whose lines are tossed in error.
