EC backs Spanish broadband subsidies

8 Apr 2005

The European Commission has approved a subsidy scheme to increase the availability of broadband internet services in rural regions of Spain. The EC has decided that the Spanish government’s ‘National Programme for the Rollout of Broadband in Rural and Remote Areas’ does not hamper competition in underserved areas and has agreed to co-finance the project. Authorities in Madrid have earmarked EUR26.4 million in direct grants and EUR111.9 million in interest-free loans which will act as an incentive for service providers to roll out broadband networks in rural regions.
