The Mexican government’s latest mobile spectrum auction has ended, with Telcel, Iusacell and Telefónica Móviles México all winning new frequencies in the 1900MHz band. The companies spent a total of MXN191 million (USD16.9 million) on new spectrum, with Telcel paying MXN85 million to acquire 10MHz in six of the country’s nine regions and 10MHz in another two regions. Meanwhile, Iusacell spent MXN57 million for 10MHz in six regions and 40MHz in two regions, and Telefónica paid MXN48 million for 10MHz in three regions and 20MHz in a further four regions. According to BNamericas, the three operators were forced to take legal action to allow them to increase their spectrum in each region to up to 65MHz, with the anti-monopoly commission CFC previously setting a maximum of 35MHz in any one area.
