1Q handset sales top 7.5 million

Mobile handset sales in Russia totalled approximately USD1.14 billion in the first quarter of 2005, according to the country’s leading phone retailer Evroset. The company estimates that 7.63 million handsets were sold in the first three months of the year, of which 1.8% were reconditioned redundant phones and a further 4.4% sold on the grey market by unofficial suppliers; SIM card sales topped 13 million. Evroset estimated that Siemens accounted for almost 20% of the units sold, with Motorola around 19%, Samsung and Nokia 18% each, and SonyEricsson around 11%.
