SpeedNet launches wireless service

31 Mar 2005

SpeedNet Communications has announced the commercial launch of its CDMA-based wireless network in Belize, under the brandname Smart. Current coverage is limited to Belize City, Orange Walk, the Corozal Free Zone, Benque Viejo and parts of the national road network, but is expected to be quickly extended to include the south, west and the rest of the north of the country by mid-year. SpeedNet’s network was built by Nortel Networks, which won the installation contract last September. SpeedNet claims that it has 5,000 pre-subscribed customers.
