DoCoMo sets 20 million 3G target

30 Mar 2005

Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has set itself an ambitious goal of selling more than 20 million 3G handsets by the end of 2005, in a bid to hold onto its dominant position. DoCoMo currently has a total of around 48 million mobile subscribers, making it the largest wireless operator in the country, although it trails behind rival KDDI in terms of 3G subscribers, claiming around 10 million users for the service compared to KDDI’s 17.4 million. DoCoMo has predicted that around 80% of the total handset sales for 2005 will be 3G. Analysts have expressed concerns that the 20 million handset target is too optimistic, although many have said that it is likely DoCoMo will overtake KDDI sometime in the future.
