Hutch faces resistance over masts

22 Mar 2005

South Australia’s Supreme Court has ruled that the 3G transmission towers recently built by Hutchison 3G Australia in the region qualify as developments subject to local planning rules, and therefore required council approval before being built. Hutch established masts by installing its equipment on the power poles of electricity provider ETSA Utilities without council approval, claiming that they were ‘low-impact facilities’ that did not require development approval under the federal Telecommunications Act. The case is ongoing.
