Consumer apathy affecting Virgin Mobile’s 3G plans

21 Mar 2005

Widespread consumer apathy towards next-generation mobile services is being blamed for Virgin Mobile’s apparent disinterest in rolling out 3G services. The MVNO pulled out of the UMTS auction in April 2000 due to high licence costs but does have a contract with T-Mobile to offer services such as video calling over the operator’s network. It now anticipates launching a limited service in the summer to test public sentiment, before ploughing ahead with a full-blown offering.
