Confusion over names for joint mobile venture

21 Mar 2005

The startup mobile venture proposed by local telephony cooperatives Fecosur and Fecotel has had its name changed to Comarcoop from its originally intended title Arcom, after the operators learnt that the Arcom name had been registered by competitors. Over 20 other non-affiliated cooperatives have agreed to join Fecosur and Fecotel in the USD100 million joint venture. Comarcoop’s launch plans rest on TEM’s Unifon returning 40Mhz of spectrum to the government as a condition of its merger with its sister company Movicom; the process of making the spectrum available could take up to four years, according to TEM.
