ComReg publishes Q4 report

21 Mar 2005

Ireland’s telecoms regulator, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), has published its report on the country’s telecoms market covering the period September-December 2004. At the end of the year the total number of mobile users reached 3.78 million, a cellular penetration of 88%, buoyed by strong sales in the run-up to Christmas. Meteor Mobile increased its market share to 9% at the end of the year, although the sector continues to be dominated by Vodafone and O2, which controlled 51% and 40% respectively. ComReg added that over one billion text messages were sent in the three-month period, up 10% quarter-on-quarter.

Broadband take-up is also on the increase. By the start of 2005 there were a total of 131,550 broadband subscribers, driven by a 37% rise in DSL connections in the fourth quarter to 114,000. Meanwhile, the number of carrier pre-selection (CPS) customers continues to grow. The figure totalled around 330,000 at 31 December, up by 10%, of which 74,300 are wholesale rental or single bill customers.
