Government urged to roll out fibre-optic network

The Australian government has been urged by a research agency to spend AUD7 billion (USD5.5 billion) on the rollout of a fibre-optic network in a bid to guarantee telecoms services outside the country’s major cities. Proponents of the project argue that it would ensure that people in rural areas have access to telecoms services once Telstra is privatised.
