MTC seeks newcomer for wireless licence

15 Mar 2005

The Peruvian telecoms regulator, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), has ruled that the country’s existing wireless operators – Telefonica Moviles (including BellSouth Peru), TIM Peru and Nextel – may not participate in the forthcoming auction of a fourth GSM concession. MTC hopes to encourage a newcomer to the market, although thus far only America Movil has shown any interest in acquiring the licence, which is scheduled to go under the hammer on 1 April.
