BT denies it is turning into an IT company

BT has stridently denied accusations that it is transforming itself into an IT company and reiterated its commitment as a world player on the communications and telecoms stage. In an interview with the Financial Times, the head of the group’s Global Services division, Andy Green, refuted claims that the unit was trying to become ‘another IBM’ saying that the convergence of PC and voice systems over a single IP network simply meant that IT was starting to overlap with BT’s traditional communications territory. Green admitted that IT was forming an increasingly large element of the division’s activities, but confirmed the group’s number one priority to be the communications sector. Only last week BT clinched a GBP1.6 billion deal to run Reuters’ data and networks worldwide.
