Market expands 10% year-on-year

Turnover in Slovakia’s telecoms market grew 10% in 2004 to SKK53 billion (USD1.89 billion), according to local newspaper Pravda. The publication claims that fixed line operator Slovak Telecom (a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom), and duopoly cellcos EuroTel (itself majority owned by Slovak Telecom) and Orange Slovensko, control 95% of the total telecoms market between them. Slovak Telecom posted sales of SKK16.8 billion for the year, compared to Orange’s SKK19.2 billion and the SKK13.3 billion of EuroTel. Pravda says that mobile penetration had reached the 80% mark by year end, with Orange boasting 2.4 million subscribers to EuroTel’s 1.9 million. In total, 5.65 million people had a wireline or wireless connection in the country at the end of 2004.
