VoIP Wi-Fi gets the A-OK

11 Mar 2005

Dublin-based operator TalkTelecom is finalising plans to launch a voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) over Wi-Fi service, follow the success of a recent two-month trial. The trial enabled users to make VoIP trials using specially equipped smartphones and PDAs, with a system that uses Wi-Fi to bridge the connection gap between a users fixed broadband service and cellular phone. VoIP calls can therefore be made so long as users stay within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot. TalkTelecom hopes the service will appeal to those looking to couple VoIP’s low access rates with the convenience of mobile technology. The company has yet to set a date for a commercial launch of the service.
