Digicel, the Latin American and Caribbean wireless operator, has bought Curacao Telecom (CT), bringing the total number of Caribbean territories in which it operates to nine. The company said it will make ‘significant’ investments in upgrading CT’s infrastructure over the next three years. CT launched in 1999 and offers mobile services as well as international wireline telephony and internet services. The island of Curacao is the largest of the Netherlands Antilles with a population of around 150,000 and a cellular penetration of 75% to 80%.
Digicell’s Caribbean operations also cover Aruba, Barbados, The Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines. In addition it provides mobile services in Venezuela, Guatemala and El Salvador.
