Celtel blames regulator for high tariffs

8 Mar 2005

Mobile operator Celtel Kenya has blamed the telecoms regulator for the high mobile charges in the country, claiming that it has been prevented from lowering its tariffs by the government’s failure to grant it a regional gateway licence. The cellco said it has been ready to offer cheaper services for customers since May 2004, but while its calls are still routed through Telkom Kenya it is not able to do so. It has urged the government to speed up the licence award.
