BT chief in the dock

8 Mar 2005

BT Group chief executive Ben Verwaayen is today expected to face intense interrogation from a committee of powerful members of parliament as he attempts to prevent a break-up of the UK’s former fixed line monopoly operator. Verwaayen will be responding to claims made by rivals, including Cable & Wireless and One.Tel, that his plan to separate BT’s consumer and wholesale businesses does not go far enough towards creating a level playing field in the phone and internet markets. If the BT chief fails to convince the Trade and Industry Select Committee that his proposals will deliver the required ‘equivalence’, regulator Ofcom will face increased pressure to push for the PTO’s businesses to be completely dismantled.
