Zantel expands to mainland

4 Mar 2005

Zanzibar Telecom, the largest telco on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, has announced that it has been awarded a nationwide licence, allowing it to expand its coverage to the mainland. The Tanzanian government opened up the country’s telecoms markets from 23 February in order to create more competition for the dominant operator TTCL. Zantel, which is 34%-owned by UAE-based telco Etisalat, intends to launch both wireline and wireless services across Tanzania and become the country’s largest alternative operator.
