Rwandan wireless payphone initiative declared a success

4 Mar 2005

A rural community project undertaken by MTN Rwanda to distribute public cellular payphones in Rwanda has so far exceeded the expectations of the company. The initiative, named Tuvugane – ‘we can all talk’ – was launched a year ago and has made more than 1,600 mobile payphones available in rural regions. MTN claim the project has put 95% of the rural population within reach of telephony services. The Tuvugane system involves local lenders micro-financing regional entrepreneurs to purchase payphones and sell airtime to phone users.
