Cellcos up in arms over pre-paid card ban

3 Mar 2005

Taiwan’s mobile operators have reacted angrily to new rules barring them from selling pre-paid cards in convenience stores, petrol stations or banks. According to Telecom Asia Daily, the new rule, which comes into effect from 7 March, will mean that cards will only be allowed to be sold at the cellcos’ official retail outlets, and will be limited to one card per person. The move is being taken to reduce the possibility of criminals using pre-paid cards illegally. The big three – Far EasTone, Chunghwa LDM and TCC – argue that there is no evidence of a link between rising crime levels and pre-paid card services.
