3 Mar 2005

The Uruguayan mobile operator Ancel has announced that it plans to invest USD10 million to expand its network capacity and improve high speed data services. According to BNamericas, the firm is also lowering its handset prices by 45% in an effort to increase the pressure on long-term competitor Movicom and new market entrant CTI Móvil, which is backed by América Móvil. Ancel has around 400,000 subscribers, 90,000 of which use its GSM network which was launched in April last year. Movicom, which was recently acquired by Telefónica of Spain, had just over 200,000 subscribers at the end of December.
