Econet set to launch mobile services

2 Mar 2005

Econet Wireless Kenya, a subsidiary of South Africa-based Econet Wireless International, won a court case yesterday which will enable it to operate a mobile phone service in the country. The operator was restrained from launching services last year by Justice Mohamed Ibraim after he was led to believe that the regulator, the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK), had breached its own tendering system when it awarded the mobile phone licence to Econet. It has since emerged that the licence award was legal, and Justice Ibraim yesterday ruled in the cellco’s favour. Econet said that it has set aside USD14 million for the build out of the network.
