SmarTone sales up, while subscribers fall

1 Mar 2005

Hong Kong wireless operator SmarTone has reported its half year results (to 31 December 2004) which show that turnover climbed 18% to HKD1.83 billion while profit dipped 4% to HKD226 million. The company blamed price erosion, constant promotions and the costs of 3G network rollout for the lower bottom line. SmarTone launched its commercial 3G network service in December 2004 under the banner SmarTone PC Connect, offering subscribers a high speed 3G/GPRS datacard and access to a broad range of business and e-mail applications. The first 3G handset, the Sanyo S103, became available in February 2005, and will be joined by a number of other models this month.
