Taiwan Cellular announces 3G launch plans

23 Feb 2005

Taiwan Cellular Corp (TCC) will launch its UMTS network on the island in the second half of 2005, in accordance with the terms of its 3G licence conditions. TCC says its new high speed network is in place and the actual timing of the launch is dependent upon whether ‘handsets, content and consumers are ready for such services’. According to its chief financial officer Cheng Hui-ming, the cellco plans to invest half this year’s USD162 million capex into rolling out its 3G service. Taiwan’s leading operator in terms of subscribers is expected to launch its own service in June/July.
