66.6 million mobile users in Brazil

According to Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel, there were 66.6 million mobile subscribers in the country at the end of January 2005, a rise of 42% in twelve months. The country’s cellcos added a total of 996,355 new users in January 2005 alone, up 71% on the figure added in January 2004; 80.5% of the new customers were pre-paid subscribers. Mobile penetration stood at 36.1%. Operators using GSM technology accounted for 35.6% of the market (23.7 million customers) with CDMA’s market share standing at 29.6% (19.7 million customers) and TDMA accounting for the remainder (23.3 million subscribers).
