3G draws closer as EDGE rollout begins

17 Feb 2005

Reports from China are suggesting that 3G licences will be awarded before the end of 2005, with Shenzen set to be the first city to experience high speed services. Asia Intelligence Wire says that the Ministry of Information Industry has asked the country’s six largest telcos – China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, China Netcom, China Tietong and China Satcom – to prepare for the final stage of 3G testing and this is a signal that concessions will soon be handed out. Meanwhile, China Mobile’s subsidiary in Guangdong Province is rolling out EDGE technology on its GSM networks in the city of Shenzen to give Chinese subscribers their first taste of near-3G mobile data speeds.
