Two new mobile licences for Pakistan??

16 Feb 2005

A report in the Asia Times has suggested that Pakistan’s government plans to hold an auction for two new mobile licences, in a further bid to open up the sector. French IT company Thales is expected to apply for one of the concessions should the auction go ahead. In reports just a few days ago, however, the government said it had no plans to award further mobile licences, although it did report that the two companies which won GSM licences in 2004 – UAE-based Warid Telecom and Telenor of Norway – are expected to roll out services this year.

In a separate story, the country’s regulator the PTA has said that it expects the telecoms sector to attract up to USD8 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) during the next three to five years.
