Good year for Jordan Telecom

16 Feb 2005

Jordan Telecom says its net income rose 34% last year to JOD46.3 million, with revenues up 10% to JOD342.5 million. The telco has attributed the positive results to increased subscriber numbers and usage; traffic was up 3% at Jordan Telecom’s fixed line unit, while the cellular division MobileCom saw a 43% jump in traffic. Jordan Telecom is currently 41.51% owned by the government, with a consortium of France Télécom and the Arab Bank holding a 40% stake and the Social Security Corporation having 13%; the remainder is in private hands. The French telco has revealed that it is in negotiations with the Jordanian government with a view to increasing its shareholding. According to a report from Agence France Presse, FT’s chairman Thierry Breton said: ‘The government has decided to reduce its equity in Jordan Telecom and … we will be definitely a player in the privatisation of Jordan Telecom.’
