State-backed cellcos boost revenues in 2004

15 Feb 2005

Revenues from Lebanon’s two state owned cellular networks – Cellis and MTC Touch Lebanon – rose from USD594 million to USD701 million in 2004, according to Telecommunication Minister Jean Louis Qordahi. By 31 December 2004 the country was home to more than 900,000 mobile subscribers, of which around 411,000 were signed up to MTC Touch. Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) and Germany-based firm Detecon took responsibility for managing the networks on 1 June 2004 and have promised to reinvigorate Lebanon’s stagnant cellular market with MTC pledging to invest in the roll out of an additional 250,000 lines to boost LibanCell’s capacity to 650,000.
