14 Feb 2005

South Africa’s Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has approved a bid from Indian telecoms group VSNL, part of the Tata Group, for a 26% equity stake in the country’s second national operator (SNO). The decision follows a drawn out bidding process, and means that the SNO is one step closer to launch. South Africa’s fixed line market it currently dominated by Telkom and the government is keen to introduce a competitor.
