eircom reports net earnings, considers mobile options

Ireland’s dominant telco eircom yesterday reported a return to net profit in its fiscal third quarter, in line with forecasts. The company’s net earnings in the three months to 31 December 2004 were EUR23 million, compared to a loss of EUR62 million a year earlier. Its turnover stayed level at EUR401 million although revenues from calls were reported to have dropped by 8%.

In light of falling fixed line voice traffic and increased mobile phone use, eircom says it plans to announce a move back into the wireless market within the next few months, possibly involving an MVNO strategy or an acquisition. eircom sold its cellular arm to Irish market leader Vodafone three years ago, and since then has concentrated on its broadband internet service, claiming 117,000 ADSL users in yesterday’s statement.
