Alcatel pips others to True Mobile deal

French equipment manufacturer Alcatel has won a USD133 million contract from Thai cellco True Mobile (formerly known as TA Orange) to expand the company’s GSM/GPRS network and upgrade it to EDGE. The upgrade is part of True’s migration path to UMTS, which is expected to be deployed in late 2005/early 2006.True Mobile is owned by True Corp (83%), Orange (10%) and Charoen Pokphand Group – parent company of True Corp – (7%).
