Taiwan Cellular not optimistic on 3G

2 Feb 2005

Mobile operator Taiwan Cellular has said it plans to roll out its 3G network by the middle of 2005, although it has expressed concerns over signing up a significant number of subscribers. The cellco plans to spend around TWD2.5 billion (USD78 million) on 3G equipment this year, despite its low expectations on the popularity of the new technology.

In 2004 the operator saw its customer base fall to 4.83 million, from 5.81 million in 2003, after it disconnected all its inactive users. Fourth quarter profits fell by 15% to TWD2.72 billion, although annual profits grew by 25% to TWD16.66 billion.
