Optus ups customer base despite saturated market

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has revealed that its Australian unit Optus has increased its customer base by around 5% in the fourth quarter of 2004, signing up 280,000 new users to take its total to 6.2 million, a 16% rise on the same period of 2003. SingTel said it is impressed with Optus’ growth as the mobile penetration rate in Australia currently stands at around 80%. Optus also added 40,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter to take the total to 310,000; it entered the DSL arena in early 2004.

SingTel’s total mobile customer base in its six operating markets (Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) grew by around 5.2 million during the three months to December 2004, to reach 61.56 million.
