Brazilian wireless operator TNL PCS, which operates under the brand name Oi, has announced that it had 6.9 million subscribers at the end of 2004, up from 3.8 million at the start of the year. TNL holds PCS licences to operate in 16 Brazilian states (namely Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Ceara, Amazonas, Roraima, Para, Maranhao, Piaui, Amapa, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte), collectively known as Region I . By the end of 2003 it was the nation’s fourth largest operator behind heavyweights Vivo, Claro and TIM. It was the first operator to launch GSM services in Brazil and has been expanding its portfolio of products and services since. In October 2003 it announced that it had conducted successful trials of new Matrix high accuracy location technology, the first of its kind in Latin America. Oi is 100% owned by fixed line telco Telemar Norte Leste.
