UK-based wireless operator mmO2 reported yesterday that it signed up 1.176 million new subscribers in the three months to 31 December, taking its total to 23.2 million. The group’s UK subscribers increased by 360,000 in the quarter to reach 14.2 million, whilst the company’s German customer base increased by 729,000 to 7.4 million. At the end of the period O2 Ireland recorded subscriber numbers of 1.5 million, up by 91,000.
mmO2 also confirmed it will launch its commercial 3G offering next month, initially for post-paid subscribers on 1 February, with services being made available to pre-paid customers shortly after. The operator plans to extend 3G coverage to 50% of the country by June 2005. Like the other 3G licensees, O2 is committed to rolling out 3G services to 80% of the population by 2007.
