Bharti Tele-Ventures has announced the connection of its ten millionth customer, becoming the first of India’s numerous GSM operators to pass the landmark. Bharti’s various licensees all offer services under the AirTel (not to be confused with Aircel or Aircel Digilink) brand name and between them possess 23 licences covering all of India. It is currently operational in all bar six of the circles, with launches in Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh (East), Assam and the North East due in early 2005. The group has set aside INR6 billion for the rollout of services to around 200 towns in the regions. In September 2004 it announced a major expansion plan devised to achieve nationwide cellular coverage by the end of its fiscal year in March 2005.
