FWA operators incur the wrath of TRAI

14 Jan 2005

Three Indian fixed wireless operators have been instructed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to withdraw their recent advertising campaigns due to allegations that they misleadingly portray fixed wireless services as mobile. Privately owned operator Reliance Infocomm and state concern MTNL have been advertising their fixed wireless services as ‘mobile services with a landline tariff’, with another, Tata Teleservices, marketing its ‘Walky’ offering as an ‘unlimited cordless’ service. Whilst Reliance and MTNL have agreed to change the wording of their respective campaigns, Tata has chosen to fight the ruling, and is taking the matter to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT).
