Chilean cellco Smartcom has increased the coverage of its CDMA2000 1x network to cover the south of the country. The mobile operator has contracted Canadian equipment supplier Nortel Networks to provide the upgrade. Nortel said it will continue working on the expansion throughout 2005; the south of the country has been prioritised to be ready in time for the tourist season. Smartcom claimed around 1.5 million subscribers to its CDMA2000 1x network at the end of 2004. It launched CDMA 1xEV-DO services in the capital Santiago last year.
