Regulator raps cellcos for sub-standard services

12 Jan 2005

Pakistan’s telecoms regulator, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has cited two of the country’s mobile operators – Mobilink and U-Fone – for providing sub-standard services, and threatened legal action, fines and even the revocation of their licences if they fail to improve. Both operators have been at the centre of a wave of complaints over call-connection errors, dropped calls, false messaging and excessive billing. The PTA says it is keen to stamp out what it sees as a deterioration in the quality of service provided by GSM operators, which is undermining its attempts to create a favourable environment for telecoms in the fast growing Pakistan market.
