MTS announces year-end totals

Russia’s largest cellular operator, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), has said that its subscriber base rose by 98.2% to 26.5 million in 2004, with 3.56 million customers added in the month of December alone. Of the total, 7.47 million subscribers were connected to MTS’ systems in Moscow and its environs, up from 4.94 million twelve months previously, with a further 1.82 million in St Petersburg and the Leningrad region (1.18 million), and 17.2 million across the rest of Russia (7.25 million). MTS also operates networks in Ukraine, where it had 7.37 million customers at the end of 2004, up from 3.35 million in 2003, and Belarus (1.21 million, up from 0.46 million). MTS inaugurated a new network in Uzbekistan during 2004, to which there were 310,000 customers at the end of the year.
