MII scotches merger rumours

4 Jan 2005

China’s telecoms regulator the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) says it has no plans to amalgamate the country’s leading operators into two or three entities, scotching news reports that it is looking to merge China Telecom with China Unicom, and China Mobile with China Netcom after it finally awards 3G licences. An official for the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission has blamed the press for the ‘media frenzy’: local reports have suggested that mergers offer a way for operators to raise funding to build out their new UMTS networks.
